Lovely and Misfit (Trafalgar Studios)

It’s about Candy (Ed Hughes) Transvestite, 35, terrified of ageing and recently deserted. Candy wants sex with virile young men, but he wants love, too, and companionship and kindness. Hughes is excellent, precise, deeply felt and entirely unsentimental.

JOHN PETER THE SUNDAY TIMES

Ed Hughes as Candy successfully combines the obsessive and the disciplined nature of his character, the tragic as well as the absurd.

RHODA KOENIG THE INDEPENDENT

Hughes performance is excellent. He’s warm, wry, flirtatious, just a little bitchy and, above all, utterly open and unapologietic about being the outsider and “misfit” the production it’s impact today

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE THE TIMES

Ed Hughes gives a superbly sensitive portrait of a hidden world.

THE METRO

A lonely New Orleans transvestite played with a heartbreaking vulnerability by Ed Hughes seeks a doomed kind of comfort in the arms of a straight sailor (Matt Ryan)

A stunning performance by Ed Hughes as a rich but fading drag queen.

THE STAGE

Ed Hughes plays the cross dressing Candy with grace poignancy and wit.

CHARLES SPENCER THE TELEGRAPH

An unnervingly beautiful transvestite played by Ed Hughes.

TIM AULD SUNDAY TELEGRAPH

A dazzling performance by Ed Hughes as Candy.

The Canterbury Tales (Royal Shakespeare Company)

The show is an ensemble triumph in which everyone, from Ed Hughes as a young student singing “I have a gentil cock” and Lisa Ellis as a brace of deceptive wives, has his or her moment in the sun.

MICHAEL BILLINGTON THE GUARDIAN

Unsurprisingly the bawdy tales are best served in The Miller’s Tale, a rendition of I have a Gentil Cock by the adulterous student Nicholas (Ed Hughes) is at this performance assisted by a game middle-aged lady in the stalls. It’s worth saddling up for.

VICTORIA SEGAL THE SUNDAY TIMES

Rough Crossings (Headlong Theatre Company)

Among the whites, the naive optimism of Ed Hughes's Clarkson is confronted in Sierra Leone by the residual racism of Mark Jax's company agent.

MICHAEL BILLINGTON THE GUARDIAN

The cast is impassioned in tooth and claw with Ed Hughes engagingly decent and quietly determined reformer, John Clarkson

WHATSONSTAGE MICHAEL COVENEY

The choral singing of hymns and spirituals is stirring and there are some strong individual performances, most notably from Ed Hughes, the resilient RN lieutenant who led the former slaves from Nova Scotia to Sierra Leone

CHARLES SPENCER THE TELEGRAPH

Ed Hughes gives a fine performance, full of passion, but rendered ineffective by his determination to be fair and above-board.

REVIEWSGATE

Ed Hughes as John Clarkson, Patrick Robinson and Peter De Jersey are able to create rounded characterizations and a sense of honourable men unable to triumph over an inherently tragic situation.

Lakeboat and Prairie du Chien (Arcola Theatre)

It's a riveting 20 minutes (following the tense hour of Lakeboat), in which Mamet displays utter mastery of rhythmic, narrative control as the stories interweave, then overlap, and explode. Nigel Cooke and Ed Hughes are entangled in the story,

Lifesavers (Theatre 503)

Ed Hughes terrifying as Mark, the child raised by the state to become its unquestioning servant.

Lyn Gardener THE GUARDIAN

Ed Hughes plays his aide Mark beautifully.
