Romeo
and
Juliet
An Original Salida Productions and Mercury Theatre Co-production
A daring new production of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet premiered in 2010 at Colchester’s Mercury Theatre.
The seven-piece orchestra Astillero from Buenos Aires and an international company of actors weave their spell and the events of Shakespeare’s classic tale unfold.
The lovers’ decline is seen not as fate but as a deliberate act of orchestration. The musicians come together expressly to tell this story, and to control the destiny and forces acting upon the characters. When they begin to play, it is they who create the world of the story. They bring the lovers together, and they ultimately bring about their deaths. The furious energy of the original Tango music and movement reflects the downward spiral of Romeo and Juliet’s ill-fated love.
